CECOVASA- FT Peruvian Arabica Coffee |
La Central de Cooperativas Agrarias Cafetaleras de los Valles de Sandi (CECOVASA) was founded in 1970 by five co-operatives with the objective of exporting directly as a group, obtaining better prices and sharing costs. Before this, farmers sold their beans to local traders, who typically paid less than half the market price. Today the organisation exports directly to US and European markets and is one of the largest small producer organisations in the country. Eight of the ten co-ops are located in Puno region and two in Cuzco region, with most farms located on the eastern slopes of the Andes. Aymara farms are mainly located in the Tambopata Valley and Quechua farms in the Inambari Valley. A third of coffee production is in the buffer zone of Bahuaja Sonene National Park. |
HOAC - FT Organic Papua New Guinea Arabica Coffee |
HOAC (Highlands Organic Agriculture Co-operative) presently has 2800 village farmers registered and living amongst the 32 village communities spread over 500 square kilometres in the Purosa valley region supporting around 12,000 family members. Coffee is the only cash crop for these people apart from a few local vegetables and the plots so small that they are often referred to as “coffee gardens”. The HOAC/Fairtrade members are all village growers who tend their small plots of coffee and individually process in their villages following organic and sustainable agricultural practices. Central processing facilities for cherry coffee have not evolved because of the long distance that needs to be travelled. The construction of these facilities may come in the future as road access improves. Fairtrade registration has brought the growers together in a common cause of development through self-help. Despite past and present challenges, the future looks a whole lot brighter for them because of Fairtrade. |
